Population Density Makes a Difference for Detroit Rail Line

Detroit faces unique challenges because geographic and economic forces have been at work for more than a century to discourage density of development. And that reality makes railroad mass transit a difficult fit for the Motor City.

Don’t get me wrong, the light rail line planned for Woodward Avenue will be terrific for institutions like the College for Creative Studies (whisking students and faculty between the main campus and the recently opened A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education), but its regional impact will be very limited. The population density is just not there. That’s not a good or bad thing. It’s reality. It’s our history. To develop real remedies we need to study where we’ve been and why things are the way they are.

100 Kisses in Paris

Amplifyd from www.odditycentral.com

A 28-year-old Taiwanese girl, studying in Paris, France, has become an internet sensation due to her “100 Kisses in Paris” project.

Yang Yaqing has made it her goal to steal the kisses of 100 men, in Paris. Apparently, Yang has come up with this strange idea, three years ago, but she was judged as promiscuous, in Taiwan. As soon as she went to study overseas, in Paris, she put her plan into action.

Thought Update:  Going out on a limb here, but pretty much anything you have to cook before eating is probably not good for you. Including bacon.

Give your YouTube Channel a Makeover with Custom Themes

Amplifyd from www.labnol.org

youtubeLike Twitter, YouTube also supports custom backgrounds and color themes so you can completely change the look of your YouTube channel in minutes and make it stand out- see example.

The unique thing about YouTube is that it supports transparent backgrounds so you can be a lot more creative with your themes. And while there are no statistics to support this, people are more likely to subscribe to your YouTube videos if the landing page looks more professional.

Watch the following 101 video to see how easy it is to customize the theme and other parts of your YouTube channel.

How to Create YouTube Backgrounds?

If you are the creative type, you can build a custom background for your YouTube channel in three easy steps. I learned the trick from YouTube user Sammy.

If you don’t want to do all the hard work, just download Sammy’s readymade template (PSD). And you are looking for a slightly wider YouTube template to support bigger monitors, use this PSD instead courtesy YouTube user Joe.

You Can Feel Safer

Feeling safer is a tricky subject, with complications both personal & political.

Feeling safer is a tricky subject, with complications that can be both personal and political.

Yes, there are real threats out there, but evolution and other factors have left a lot of us walking around in a kind of paranoid trance. I’ve been there myself, and the results include feeling less peaceful and hopeful, and more worried and cranky, than is right.

Is There Really a Tiger in Those Bushes?

Consider these two mistakes:
1.  You think there’s a tiger in the bushes, but actually there isn’t one.

2.  You think no tiger is in the bushes, but actually one is about to pounce.

Most of us make the first error much more often than the second one, because:

Story About Landing Job Thru Twitter

Amplifyd from themaykazine.com

For Christmas, I got a new job.

I got my new job through Twitter.

If my life is going to be like this every sixth months, I am going to have to sign up for some intense meditation sessions. (Though I probably should anyway.) Half a year ago I was promoted, training, interviewing, hired, moving, and anniversarying – all in the same cluster of weeks. In the current Fall/Winter ‘09 version of this roller coaster, I was dealing with working full-time, contracting on the side, being offered a full-time dream job, discovering a lump in my breast (ultrasound early next year), and sensing hints of a promotion from a team of people I really enjoy and respect. (Note latter use of present tense verbs.)
